GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS

Please take a moment to look at your phone when prompted, rather than guessing. This exercise works best when you observe your actual numbers.

The first question on the survey is meant to gauge your preconceptions about your contacts. After you complete the first question, follow the directions below to see your actual number of contacts:

HOW TO FIND YOUR TOTAL NUMBER OF CONTACTS 

For iPhone users 

1. Open the Contacts app (or open the Phone app and tap Contacts). 

2. If prompted, select All Contacts or Lists. 

3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of your contacts list. 

4. Your total number of contacts will appear at the bottom of the screen. 

Note: This number includes people you may no longer be in contact with.

For Samsung Android users 

1. Open the Contacts app. 

2. Tap the three horizontal lines or three dots in the corner of the screen. 

3. Tap Manage contacts or Contacts settings. 

4. Select Contacts count or View contacts count. 

5. Your total number of saved contacts will be displayed.

Alternative method (if the total is not visible): 

1. Open the Contacts app. 

2. Make sure you are viewing All contacts (not just SIM or one account). 

3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list. 

4. The total number of contacts may appear at the bottom.

If you cannot find an exact number, please give your best estimate.
